It was originally a rural town, but experienced rapid growth in the 1990s and 2000s, becoming a major residential suburb of Phoenix. The city is named after Statler's dream of a "surprise" in the desert. Surprise Stadium, a notable landmark, is the spring training home of the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals baseball teams.
