It is located at the northern tip of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, at the narrowest part of the Straits of Mackinac. The city was founded in 1671 by Father Jacques Marquette, a French Jesuit missionary, and is named after Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order. A notable attraction in Saint Ignace is the Mackinac Bridge, which connects the city to Mackinaw City on the Lower Peninsula and is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world.
