Bolivar, Missouri is a city in Polk County, located in the western part of the state. It was founded in 1835 and named after Simón Bolívar, a leader in the Latin American fight for independence. The city played a role in the Civil War as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Bolivar is home to the Dunnegan Memorial Park, which features a large heron sculpture and a lake for fishing and boating. Today, the city has a population of approximately 10,000 people.
