Alcolu is a small town in Clarendon County, South Carolina, US, with a population of approximately 400 as of 2010. It was established in the early 20th century as a company town for a lumber mill. The town is notable for its connection to the Civil Rights Movement, as it was the childhood home of Sarah Mae Flemming, who in 1954, at the age of 18, was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus to a white person, preceding the more famous incident involving Rosa Parks. The town is also home to the historic Alcolu Presbyterian Church, which was established in 1867.
