Balsam Lake, Wisconsin, is the county seat of Polk County and the largest lake in the county. The lake covers 1,325 acres and has a maximum depth of 38 feet. It was originally named "Pokegama Lake" by the Ojibwe people, meaning "water that is shallow here and deep there." European settlers later renamed it "Balsam Lake" due to the abundance of balsam fir trees in the area. A notable attraction is the Balsam Lake Logging Dam, which was built in 1896 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
