It was established in 1700 by English Quakers and was originally known as Milltown due to the numerous mills built along the Brandywine Creek. The name was later changed to Downingtown in 1812 to honor the Downing family, who were prominent residents and contributors to the community's growth. The town is home to the historic Kerr House, a National Historic Landmark, which was built in 1793 and served as a stop on the Underground Railroad.
