Grand Prairie, Texas, located in Dallas County, was incorporated in 1909. The city was named for its prairie land and was a stop on the Texas and Pacific Railway. During World War II, Grand Prairie became a major defense contractor with the Vought aircraft factory. A notable attraction is the Lone Star Park, a horse racetrack and entertainment destination, which opened in 1997. Today, Grand Prairie has a population of approximately 196,000, making it the fifteenth most populous city in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
