Putnam, Connecticut, established in 1855, is a town in Windham County. It was originally part of Pomfret and known as "Upper Pomfret." The town was renamed in honor of Israel Putnam, a hero of the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. Putnam is known for its historic district, featuring well-preserved buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. A notable landmark is the Putnam Bank Building, a Greek Revival structure built in 1875.
