The area was originally inhabited by the Calusa people before Spanish explorers arrived in the 16th century. Estero is home to the Mound Key Archaeological State Park, a notable attraction that features ancient shell mounds built by the Calusa. The city is also known for its extensive waterways and is the site of Florida Gulf Coast University.
