It was incorporated in 1925, founded by avid horse racing enthusiast Glen Curtiss and Missouri cattleman James H. Bright. The city is named after the Native American word "hai-lah-hayes" meaning "pretty prairie." The city features the historic Hialeah Park Racing & Casino, a noted landmark and former home to the Florida Derby.
