Cahokia, Illinois, located across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri, is the site of a pre-Columbian Native American city that was occupied from around 600 to 1400 AD. At its peak, the city covered nearly 6 square miles and was the largest and most influential urban center north of Mexico. The site is home to the Cahokia Mounds, a collection of 120 mounds that were part of the city's religious, political, and social structures, and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The largest mound, Monks Mound, is 100 feet tall and covers 14 acres.
