Rantoul, Illinois, located in Champaign County, was first settled in the 1820s and incorporated in 1869. It was named after Robert Rantoul, a Massachusetts congressman and legal reformer. The town experienced growth during World War II with the construction of the Chanute Air Force Base, which operated from 1917 to 1993 and is now a popular tourist attraction as the Chanute Air Museum. Rantoul's population is approximately 12,000.
