Monroe, NC, located in Union County, was established in 1843 and named after James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States. The town served as a key supply station for the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. It experienced significant growth in the 20th century due to its agricultural and textile industries. Today, it is known for the historic downtown area, which includes the James K. Polk State Historic Site, the birthplace and childhood home of the 11th U.S. President.
