It was founded in 1857 and named after Julia Beatrice Loring, the daughter of a prominent local citizen. The city is home to the Homestead National Monument of America, which commemorates the Homestead Act of 1862, a significant event in American history that allowed any adult male citizen or intended citizen to claim up to 160 acres of public land, provided they lived on the land for five years and improved it.
