Tumwater is a city in Thurston County, Washington, US, located south of the state capital, Olympia. With a population of approximately 20,000 as of 2020, it is a part of the Olympia-Tumwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was established in the 1840s and was originally the site of the first permanent American settlement in the Pacific Northwest, Fort Lewis. Tumwater Falls, a scenic waterfall on the Deschutes River, is a notable attraction in the city.
