Livingston, Alabama, US is the county seat of Sumter County. It was established in 1835 and named after Edward Livingston, a US Senator and Secretary of State. The town is home to the University of West Alabama, which was founded in 1835 as a church-supported school for girls. Livingston's historic downtown district features well-preserved antebellum architecture, including the Sumter County Courthouse, built in 1902.
