Fort Smith, Arkansas, US was established in 1817 at the confluence of the Arkansas and Poteau rivers. It served as a military post and a gateway to the west for settlers. The town is named after General Thomas Adam Smith. A notable landmark is the Fort Smith National Historic Site, which preserves the military post and later federal court complex, including the restored courtroom of "Hanging Judge" Isaac Parker.
