Salton City, California, US is a planned community in Imperial County, established in 1958. It is located on the shores of the Salton Sea, a large saline lake, which was formed in 1905 due to flooding of the Colorado River. The city was originally intended to be a resort destination, but its growth stagnated due to the rising salinity and odor of the Salton Sea. Today, it is a sparsely populated city with a reputation for abandoned buildings and a surreal, apocalyptic landscape. The Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge, home to over 400 bird species, is a notable attraction in the area.
