Sumner, Georgia, US is a town in Taylor County, established in 1852 and incorporated in 1856. It was named after Charles Sumner, a prominent abolitionist senator. The town was a strategic location during the Civil War and was burned by General Sherman's troops. Sumner is home to the Taylor County Historical Society, which features exhibits on the area's history and a notable attraction, the old Taylor County Jail, built in 1888.
