Chariton is a city in Lucas County, Iowa, US, founded in 1851 and incorporated in 1861. It was named after the Chariton River, which itself was named after a Native American tribe. The city served as a commercial center for the surrounding agricultural area and was a stop on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The Lucas County Courthouse, built in 1893, is a notable landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1981.
