La Salle is a city in Illinois, US, located along the Illinois River. It was founded in 1831 and named after the French explorer Robert de La Salle. The city served as an important transportation hub in the 19th century, with the Illinois and Michigan Canal and several railroads passing through. The city's historic district, known as "Canal Port," features well-preserved buildings from this era. The city is also home to the Hegeler Carus Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that was built in 1874.
