Savanna, Illinois, founded in 1828, is a city located in Carroll County along the Mississippi River. It is known for its rich history, which includes being a stop on the Underground Railroad. The city was named after the savannas, or open grasslands, that were common in the area. A notable landmark is the Savanna Army Depot, which was a major munitions storage and manufacturing facility during World War II. Today, the depot is partially closed, but a portion of it has been converted into a wildlife refuge.
