Belle Plaine, Kansas, US is a city in Sumner County, established in 1871. It was named after Belle Plaine, Iowa, the former home of many of its early settlers. The city was a significant stop on the Chisholm Trail and served as a shipping point for wheat and cattle. The most notable landmark in Belle Plaine is the Historic Chief Theatre, a vintage movie house built in 1917, which still operates today.
