Hays, Kansas, US is a city in Ellis County and is the county seat. It was founded in 1867 by Fort Hays soldiers and named after Captain James H. Hayes. The city played a significant role in the settlement of the American West as a stop along the Union Pacific Railroad. The city is home to Fort Hays State University and the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, known for its fossil exhibits, including the famous "fish-within-a-fish" fossil.
