Lyons, Kansas, US is a city in Rice County, established in 1885. It was named after Samuel Lyon, a general store owner. The city was incorporated in 1887 and experienced growth with the arrival of the Missouri Pacific Railroad. Lyons is known for the Coronado Cross, a large white concrete cross on a hill overlooking the city, built in 1930 to commemorate the Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado's search for the Seven Cities of Gold.
