Tonganoxie is a city in Leavenworth County, Kansas, US, founded in the 1860s. It was initially a stagecoach stop and trading post on the Santa Fe Trail. The city was named after a Kansa Indian chief, Tonganoxie. In 1866, the first post office was established, and the city was incorporated in 1871. The Chieftain Hotel, built in 1927, is a notable landmark, known for its historic architecture and role in the city's past.
