Wathena, Kansas, located in Doniphan County, was established in 1857 and incorporated in 1858. It is situated on the south bank of the Missouri River, opposite the city of St. Joseph, Missouri. The town was named after Wathena Nuss, the daughter of an early settler. Wathena is home to the Chief White Hair Memorial, a notable landmark that honors the Shawnee leader who signed the Treaty of St. Louis in 1825. The town has a rich history in agriculture, manufacturing, and transportation, with the first railroad bridge across the Missouri River built nearby in 1869.
