Stearns, Kentucky, US is a small town in McCreary County. It was established in the late 19th century as a company town for the Stearns Coal and Lumber Company. The town was named after George W. Stearns, the company's president. At its peak, Stearns had a population of over 10,000 and was a major center for coal mining and timber operations in the region. Today, the town has a population of around 1,500 and is home to the Stearns Coal and Lumber Company Historic District, which includes several well-preserved buildings from the town's heyday and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
