The town played a significant role during the American Revolution as a stop on the Underground Railroad, helping slaves escape to freedom. A notable attraction is the historic Dean Park, home to the Sweets-Clark House, built in 1741, and the only remaining structure with a direct connection to the Underground Railroad in Shrewsbury.
