Free Soil is a village in Onota Township, Schoolcraft County, Michigan, United States. It was founded in 1844 and named after the Free Soil Party, which opposed the expansion of slavery. The village is known for its historic schoolhouse, built in 1892, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Free Soil was a busy lumbering center in the late 19th century, with several sawmills and a shingle mill. Today, it is a small, rural community with a population of around 150.
