The town is named after Orchard Lake, a 774-acre lake it surrounds. The village is home to the Orchard Lake Schools, a Catholic educational complex consisting of a college preparatory school, a pontifical university, and a seminary. The complex is known for its historic St. Mary's Church, a notable landmark in the area.
