Madelia, Minnesota, located in Watonwan County, was founded in 1871 and incorporated in 1875. The town was named after a Native American woman, Madelia, who was the daughter of a Dakota chief. Madelia was the site of the largest engagement of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, the Battle of Madelia. Today, the town is home to the Madelia Depot Museum, a notable attraction that showcases the town's history, including its role in the U.S.-Dakota War.
