It was incorporated in 1890 and named after the Choctaw word "pela hatchie," meaning "divided river." The town is home to the historic Choctaw Agency, which was established in 1801 as a trading post and later served as the headquarters for the Choctaw Nation during the removal period in the 1830s. Today, Pelahatchie is known for its small-town charm and community events, such as the annual Pelahatchie Shootout, a popular bass fishing tournament.
