Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, US is a city located in Washington County, along the Missouri River. It was established in 1854 and named after John C. Calhoun, the seventh Vice President of the United States. The city is known for its rich history, including the Fort Atkinson Historical Site, a former military outpost from the 1820s. Fort Calhoun was the site of the only nuclear power plant in Nebraska, which was permanently shut down in 2016. Today, the city is a small, close-knit community with a population of around 900 residents.
