Aztec, New Mexico, located in San Juan County, is known for its ancient Puebloan history. The town was named after the Aztec Ruins National Monument, a misnomer as the site has no connection to the Aztec civilization of Mexico. The monument contains well-preserved structures built by Ancestral Puebloans between 1100 and 1300 AD. Aztec was incorporated as a city in 1912 and has since grown to a population of approximately 6,500, with a significant portion of its economy based on agriculture, tourism, and oil and gas production.
