Columbus, New Mexico, is a small village in Luna County, near the Mexican border. It was established in the late 19th century and gained notoriety in March 1916 when Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa raided the town, resulting in the death of several American citizens. This event led to the Punitive Expedition by the U.S. Army, pursuing Villa into Mexico. Today, Columbus is home to the Pancho Villa State Park, which offers historical exhibits, camping, and hiking opportunities.
