The town's name was derived from the biblical description of the tribe of Dan, which was said to be "cunning as a serpent, and harmless as a dove." A notable landmark in Candor is the Candor Methodist Episcopal Church, a well-preserved example of Carpenter Gothic architecture, built in 1877.
