Elmont, NY, located in Nassau County, is a part of the New York City metropolitan area. It was founded in 1653 and was originally inhabited by the Rockaway and Merikoke Indians. The community was primarily agricultural until the early 20th century when it began to develop residentially. Belmont Park, a notable attraction, is located in Elmont. This racetrack, which opened in 1905, has hosted the Belmont Stakes, one of the three races that make up the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, since 1926.
