Port Ewen is a hamlet in Ulster County, New York, United States. It is located on the west bank of the Hudson River, opposite the city of Kingston. The area was originally inhabited by the Esopus tribe, a Munsee-speaking band of the Lenape nation. In the early 18th century, European settlers began to arrive, and the area became known as Esopus. The name was changed to Port Ewen in 1853, in honor of John Ewen, a local merchant. A notable landmark is the Esopus Meadows Lighthouse, which was built in 1871 to mark the location of dangerous shoals in the Hudson River.
