It was originally inhabited by the Setalcott tribe and later settled by European settlers in the 17th century. The community was a popular summer resort in the early 20th century, with the opening of the Rocky Point Amusement Park in 1892. The park, which featured roller coasters, a boardwalk, and a dance hall, attracted visitors from New York City and beyond until its closure in 1987. Today, Rocky Point is a residential community with a population of approximately 14,000, and the site of the former amusement park is now a state park offering outdoor activities such as hiking and fishing.
