It was named after the Frenchman Simon Girard, a military engineer who served under General Anthony Wayne during the Northwest Indian War. The city is known for its historic downtown district, which includes the Gillchrist Building, a notable landmark built in 1896. Girard has a rich industrial history, once home to the largest nail factory in the world, the Eagle Manufacturing Company. Today, it is a residential community with a population of approximately 9,000.
