Chouteau, Oklahoma, US is a town in Mayes County, named after French fur trader Pierre Chouteau, Jr. It was established in 1889 as a railroad town and incorporated in 1905. The town has a rich Native American history, being located in the Cherokee Nation. A notable attraction is the Chouteau Lock and Dam, the first dam on the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System.
