The town is known for its rich coal mining history and was once home to the largest mine in the world, the Glendale Coal Company's No. 6 mine. A notable attraction in Central City is the Quecreek Mine Rescue Site, where in 2002, nine miners were successfully rescued after being trapped for over 77 hours.
