Pelion, South Carolina, located in Lexington County, was founded in the mid-1800s. The town was named after Mount Pelion in Greece, as a tribute to the large Greek population that settled in the area. Pelion was a hub for the timber industry, with several sawmills operating in the early 1900s. Today, it is a rural town with a population of around 1,000 people. A notable attraction in Pelion is the historic Pelion depot, which was built in 1911 and served as a passenger and freight station for the Seaboard Air Line Railroad until the 1950s.
