Fort Thompson, South Dakota, located in Buffalo County, is an unincorporated community along the Missouri River. Established in 1866 as a military post, it was named after Major General William Thompson. The post was established to protect the nearby Yankton Sioux Indian Agency and to maintain peace during the construction of the railroad.
