Old Hickory, Tennessee, US is a census-designated place in Davidson County. It was named after President Andrew Jackson, who was also known as "Old Hickory." The town was originally built as a planned community for workers at the DuPont powder plant during World War I. The Old Hickory Lock and Dam, a notable attraction on the Cumberland River, provides hydroelectric power and recreational opportunities for the area. Today, Old Hickory is a residential community with a population of approximately 15,000.
