Canadian, TX, located in Hemphill County, was established in 1887 and named after the Canadian River. The town served as a shipping point for cattle and agricultural products. It became the county seat in 1890. The town's notable landmark, the Hemphill County Courthouse, built in 1909, is a well-preserved example of early 20th-century public architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
