Livingston, Texas, located in Polk County, was established in 1846 and named after Edward Livingston, a former Secretary of State. The town served as a trading center for the surrounding agricultural area. In 1965, the Big Thicket National Preserve, a notable landmark and the nation's first conservation area to protect biological diversity, was established near Livingston. Today, Livingston is the county seat and has a population of approximately 5,000 people.
