Wallis, Texas, located in Austin County, was established in the mid-1800s. It was named after a railroad official, John Wallis. The town served as a shipping point for cotton and cattle in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, Wallis is home to the historic Wallis Baptist Church, a beautiful limestone structure built in 1917 that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town has a population of around 1,300 residents and covers an area of approximately 1.1 square miles.
