Amherst is a village in Portage County, Wisconsin, United States. Established in 1872, it was named after Amherst, Nova Scotia, the hometown of one of the early settlers. The village is known for its well-preserved historic buildings, including the Amherst Mill, a grist mill built in 1873 that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As of the 2020 census, the population was approximately 1,100.
